Communication in the Information Age

The red blinking light on my desk phone proclaims any number of voicemails that need to be heard; email declares 30 messages waiting for a reply; blog readers expect an update; and Twitter followers demand a tweet. Ah, communication in the information age!
I have a scripture hanging on the wall in my office. It’s right between my phone and computer.

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 6:4 (NIV)

I also like this translation.

Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out. Colossians 6:4 (The Message)

Sometimes I communicate with the goal of crossing one more thing off my “to do” list. This scripture reminds me that communication is about more than a to do list. It is all about relationships even in the information age.
