Monday Morning Work Blues

Today is a beautiful Monday morning. The sun is bright and cheerful. The birds are singing.

And I don't want to spend the day at work in front of a computer.

On days like today it sure seems that the Lord might be calling me to another profession. Maybe one which requires me to spend at least eight hours a day out in the sunshine. My mind begins to race through the possibilities. I could be a lifeguard, an organic vegetable farmer, a landscape designer, or maybe even the captain of a leisure ship.

Isn’t it funny how we can easily romanticize and think of the positive aspects of so many other jobs and career paths but only think of the negative aspects of our own situation? Sometimes we even go so far as to try to excuse our negative attitude by claiming that God must have a different call for our work lives, one that we perceive to be much more glamorous.

Instead of giving in to the Monday morning blues, follow this instruction from scripture:

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NKJV)

The Lord must have known that we'd be weak on Monday mornings. It’s clear what he has commanded us to do. It’s kind of hard to complain when you are rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks.
